Skill Development and Strength and Conditioning

Backed by the longest tenured Coaching Staff in Chicago, the organization is dedicated to providing  training focused at prerequisite Junior and NCAA Division I levels. The Fury Staff understands the requirements of exceeding Junior and NCAA Division I expectations directly relating to Skills, Power Skating, Goalie Instruction, Strength and Conditioning.  As such Coach John Varga, Coach Darren McClusky, Brett Roat and Coach Jeff Blindauer begin teaching these disciplines in a progressive method to players beginning at the Mite birth years.

John Varga- Director of Power Skating and Skill Development

Coach John is a Chicago native with six years of International experience as a member of Team USA and nine years at the pro level. He played his entire WHL Junior career with the Tacoma ranking 2nd top US born player in WHL scoring history. John was a member of US Select 15, 16, 17, 18 teams during his amateur career and winner of Gold and Silver medals at the 1992 and 1993 US Olympic Festivals. He then played for the 94 US World Junior Team and the over 20 US National team preparing for the Olympic Games. Coach John still holds records for on ice testing at the US training centers.

John was selected by the Washington Capitals in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. John experienced the birth of NHL summer training programs with the Capitals advancing 12 players in three draft years to the NHL club. After his pro career he retired in the suburbs of Chicago near his father Lou Varga, who was the Trainer for the Chicago Black Hawks for 39 years before his induction into the Hall of Fame.

John attributes his Coaching philosophy by possessing an attitude of willingness to learn from individuals who have experienced success and adopting teaching principles accrued from his unique experience. His teaching has been influenced by Co-Coaching with legendary Denis Savard for the 2002 Brick Team. Darren McCluskey – Director Goalie Development

Coach McClusky is the longest tenured Coach in Illinois. Many of his former players are now Coaches throughout the United States. Additionally many have advanced to play at the collegiate level and professional ranks. He has been playing and teaching the goaltending position for the past 30+ years. As a goalie Darren matriculated through the Youth hockey ranks of Chicago and played Junior hockey in Canada before retiring from the ECHL in 1991.

Darren then turned to teaching hockey full time and added coaching, scouting and player evaluations to his growing resume. He has won multiple National AAA Championships as a Head Coach in Chicago and is widely considered a pioneer building and organizing AAA Hockey in Illinois.  He is referenced many times with the NHL Central scouting department, player agents and he continues to work on behalf of his students and players helping them advance up the development ladder.  Darren also works on behalf of AHAI evaluating players for the US National Development Team.

Darren worked for the three largest hockey school operators in North America providing program direction for Huron Hockey School, Can Am and Turcotte before branching out on his own. He continues to provide instructional expertise and consults on curriculum changes with Huron Hockey School.

Jeff Blindauer, MS, CSCS, USAW- Director Strength and Conditioning

Coach Jeff received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from South Dakota State University. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and also a Certified Sports Performance Coach through USA Weightlifting.

Jeff ran the Strength and Conditioning program which helped the USHL Sioux Falls Stampede win the Anderson Cup in 2006 and the Clark Cup in 2007. He provided complete strength and conditioning for the team.  These services include comprehensive in-season training: warm-ups, strength technique training, nutrition services, conditioning, recovery, post injury rehab, motivation, and aerobic and anaerobic power training.  We also provided an off season training manual and year round follow up and communication with each player who doesn't stay in the area. Among many other great hockey players, he has trained players such as Hobey Baker winner Marty Sertich, Stanley Cup winners Chad LaRose and Alex Goligoski, Thomas Vanek of the Buffalo Sabres, and Andreas Nodl of the Philadelphia Flyers.
